ODIUM - Graduation Film

odi·um | ō-dē-əm
ODIUM: the state or fact of being subjected to hatred and contempt as a result of a despicable act or blameworthy circumstance.

ODIUM is about an old soldier who struggles with his violent past.

Research & Backgrounds

Before I started with working on the film, I did my research on backgrounds. First, I made a block lay-out in Blender, made a screenshot of the shot that I wanted and painted it over in Clip Studio Paint.
This way, I didn’t have to focus my time on perspective, and could immediately jump into the details of the backgrounds.

Happy with the result, I used this method on almost all my backgrounds in the city.

Color

Not only did I want to make easy backgrounds, I also wanted them to tell the story in colors. In the beginning of the film, we see the main character fighting in the war. The colors are Red and Black. After the war, colors come back. Working with contrast, the colors are Green and full of life.
But as the movie develops, so does the color. The sun goes down and the colors slowly lose their lifeness. It turns from green to yellow to purple to grey. In the end, we only see the grey background with the red of the blood. Just like in the beginning, like the soldier, the background steps into its old ways.
